Teaching Others How to Skate

I had another great training day on ice! But something I observed today is that a lot of people don’t know how to teach their kids how to skate – either for lack of skill or lack of teaching ability. In particular, most people have no idea how to teach kids to stop on skates.

It’s very simple – get a marker (I like the smelly markers because they’re cheap and fun) and get the kids to draw whatever they want on the ice. Then, get them to scrape the drawing off with their skates. Not only does it teach them how to apply pressure with their blade which is fundamental in learning to stop but it also helps them get more comfortable with the ice.
